As educators we are navigating and juggling providing a safe learning environment, managing behaviors, planning lessons that are engaging and differentiated, tracking data, communicating with caregivers, providing extracurricular support, grading papers, and evaluating every moment on how we could have been a “better” teacher. There never seems to be enough. In this post-pandemic era, managing behaviors tends to be encompassing most of our time.
By understanding neurodiversity and how sensory processing impacts learners, we can make subtle changes that reduce the time maladaptive behaviors take away from classroom instruction.
Start increasing learning time and decreasing referrals.
This is the introduction to sensory and neurodiversity. We learn what neurodiversity is and the strengths and challenges associated with neurodivergence. From there we start to identify behaviors that may be attributed to neurodivergence.
Is it a smell, scratchy tag, inability to judge space, florescent lights flashing, lack of sleep, hunger, fear of failure, anxiety, trauma, learning disability…why does this behavior happen? As educators it’s a reality that some students display more disruptive behaviors than others. It is also a reality that we become fatigued in redirecting the same behaviors repeatedly. Behavior is a form of communication and with tools to identify why behaviors are happening, we can reduce frustration, disruption and increase the enjoyment of learning and teaching for all.
We love our classrooms. Hours are spent organizing and finding ways to make it fun and engaging to our students. There are many things happening, and each has a purpose. Whiteboard/smartboard, behavior charts, goal charts, student work, table numbers, group rotations, schedules, homework lists, learning objectives, assignment directions… Plus the pencil tapper, nose sniffing, hum of the HVAC, the clock…
How do we lower the stimulation and still put our stamp on learning?
Includes self-evaluation of classrooms or other learning spaces.
Our consultants can work with you or your educators on how to create a sensory supportive learning environment that supports all learners. We will assess smell, pathways, visual stimulation, sound, and more. We will also help guide you on how to do the same.
